Perceived user time

What is time anyway? What really counts is time as perceived by the user, not absolute time (just like perceived quality counts a lot more than absolute quality). Chris of effectivus has some nice tables of how software needs to respond when the user does something – or doesn’t. I just wonder how software can tell daydreaming and concentrated thinking apart…
